Youth Minister/Confirmation Coordinator

St. Joseph Parish (Long Beach)






St. Joseph Parish in Long Beach is seeking a full-time Youth Ministry/High School Confirmation Coordinator. We are looking for a team player passionate about the faith and youth ministry with experience working with large groups of teens and catechists, knowledge of catechetical studies/theology, and administrative tasks. The Youth Ministry/High School Confirmation Coordinator will provide personal leadership, training, support, and oversight concerning events, programs, catechists, retreats, and spiritual growth of middle schoolers through young adults.

Director of Faith Formation


• Must be a practicing Catholic
• A prayerful individual with a background in Theology/Religious Studies, experience working with teens, and experience working in Youth Ministry
• High level of professionalism, confidentiality, and pastoral care
• Must have excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to foster healthy relationships with teens, families, staff, and the parish community
• Strong administrative skills and computer literacy (MS Office 365 and Google Suite)
• Must be available to work evenings and weekends.
• Occasional local travel may be required.
• Must have a California driver’s license and auto insurance
• A background check and Safe Environment training are required of all parish employees and volunteers.
• Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications for the position.

• Plan and coordinate the weekly Sunday High School Confirmation program using Decision Point and Chosen series Ascension Press.
• Recruit and prepare adult leaders and peer leaders for the Confirmation Retreats
• Involve parents in the program – initial information meeting of program, confirmation celebrations, and request support as required.
• Arrange and support service opportunities.
• Implement a confirmation sponsor and mentorship program.
• Organize, plan and lead confirmation retreats

Youth Ministry
• Plan and implement a High School and Jr. High Youth Ministry Program.
• Create opportunities to incorporate the eight key components in the “Archdiocesan Comprehensive Approach” document – advocacy, catechesis, community life, evangelization, justice and service, leadership development, pastoral care, and prayer and worship.
• Provide administrative support (purchase tickets, process registrations for Youth Day, City of Saints, etc.)
• Lead Tuesday Middle School Youth Ministry Nights.
• Facilitates Empowering God’s Children High School and Middle School Awareness Sessions
• Be present at the Sunday 12:30 pm Mass to greet youth and their families, as well as invite new members to ministry with youth. Encourage youth to participate in the Liturgy.
• Recruit, train, and manage a diverse, passionate, committed adult Core Team. Conduct regularly scheduled core team meetings throughout the year to help empower the group and delegate tasks.
• Acknowledge youth as part of the total church family and, therefore, take opportunities to create the youth program within the present structures of the parish and encourage youth to develop leadership abilities.
• Coordinate outreach to the local high schools.

Overall Duties and Responsibilities
• Collaborate closely with the Director of Faith Formation.
• Develop a united mission and vision for High School and Middle School Youth Ministry and Confirmation.
• Maintain effective working relationships with parish/school staff and all other ministries to coordinate activities as appropriate
• Inform the parish of Events via weekly bulletins, email, website, and social media.
• Create and maintain an annual budget with the Director of Faith Formation.
• Nurture a smooth transition for children, teens, and families into and out of ministries.
• Communicate and Coordinate events and activities with the church staff and attends monthly pastoral staff meetings.
• Bulletin announcements and website updates.
• Aid the sacramental preparation programs according to Archdiocesan and Parish Policy.
• Parent / Guardian information updates
• It requires some variable hours and on-call response after regular hours to meet the need of the parish; requires some weekend, holiday, and evening work for events or the ability to arrange coverage.
• Performs other functions as required by the Pastor
