Description

The Teacher Librarian provides research and educational support to students and assists the faculty with instruction-related duties and curriculum needs. The Teacher Librarian is responsible for creating a studious and research-oriented environment, maintaining current and new technology and keeping current with appropriate reading materials and recommended book selections for students. In addition, this position will teach two sections of English.

Student Services
• Helps students with research, helping them to navigate all of our library resources (print books, e-books, databases, etc.)
• Helps students evaluate validity of sources for research
• Assists students in locating sources for specific research assignments
• Helps students with MLA formatting and citation
• Provides reading suggestions
• Maintains a studious environment
• Monitors student use of the library
• Communicates with student readers for book recommendations

Instruction-Related Duties
• Meets with teachers and plans class visits and class research projects
• Conducts library orientation instruction for freshmen and research instruction for specific classes and/or disciplines
• Consults with teachers about their curriculum needs
• Plans reserves when required for class assignments
• Consults with English teachers to help create outside reading lists
• Makes suggestions to teachers of potentially helpful resources or opportunities that could support curriculum
• Teaches and encourages teaching research skills within the content-area curriculum
• Provides suggested scaffolding of research, library, and information skills

Books and Library Resources
• In consultation with the Principal and Assistant Principal for Academics, provides for book selection
• Reads review media for both print and non-print items
• Consults with teachers about information needs
• Orders library materials throughout the year (print and electronic)
• Consults with publishers’ representatives and previews new materials
• Consult with representatives of electronic resources (such as databases) and previews new materials
• Sets up trials of new databases and collects teacher and student feedback in order to make purchasing decisions
• Evaluates and orders online subscription databases
• Shops booksellers on a regular basis to see what is new
• Maintains subscription orders on magazines and newspapers
• Coordinates the textbook adoption process and works with faculty and textbook distributor to update the required texts in the online bookstore
• In consultation with the Principal and Assistant Principal for Academics, provides for weeding and discarding books and materials
• Catalogs new books and prepares them for processing
• Maintains the library catalog
• Updates library software
• Consults with library software technician and keeps up with technology changes
• Consults with the Administration on technology needs and upgrading of hardware and software
• Maintains the Library Services portion of the school website
• Develops and maintains the budget, submits bills for payment, manages fines and copy card money
• Sees to necessary repairs and maintenance for the library building, computers, and copy machine
• Networks with other libraries and librarians with the goal of developing more ways to share library resources

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in secondary or elementary education, English or equivalent
• Master of Library Science (MLS) or Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree preferred
• Teaching experience (high school preferred)
