What is Gabe’s Place? Gabe’s Place is a summer day camp for boys and girls in 1-5th graders from June 17 – July 12, 2024. Gabe’s Place is located on the campus of the San Gabriel Mission High School at 254 S. Santa Anita St. San Gabriel.

Why Gabe’s Place? Gabe’s Place is a youth and young adult leadership development program for the parish and school communities of San Gabriel starting with training and preparations June 1, 2024 or before based on availability. Through the operations of a summer day camp, camp counselors, activity directors, and camp directors develop executive, administrative, and facilitation skills. This program is also meant to cultivate the relationships with SGMHS and the parish, elementary school, and other partner schools by offering an affordable summer enrichment program for school age children. How is the young adult intern involved? Learn about servant leadership in an intentional community of collaborators. This internship will provide a mix of opportunities for learning and gaining job experience especially through the administrative aspects of summer camp programming which includes but is not limited to supervising/managing volunteer staff, program design and implementation, parent/family communication, and oversee the overall health, safety, and recreation of 40-60 school age children. This internship will begin with planning and training meetings June 1, 2024 and will end with a debrief/evaluative meeting in early August and is approximately 40 hours per week. Young adult interns report to the program coordinator.

Job Description – Director will work closely together on the following:

  • The director will supervise and monitor as many as 20 youth/young adult volunteer staff and up to 60 children on a daily basis
  • The director will have an established team task that may include but is not limited to:
    • Health and safety
      • Crossing guard
      • Rules
      • Make sure that once all doors are open they are then shut and locked.
      • First Aid
        • Hydration
        • Sunscreen
        • First Aid Kit
      • All campers are making and being good friends
    • Yard Duty
      • Cleaning duty during and after Recess & Lunch
      • Making sure at all times there are camp counselors in their areas of supervision
      • Making sure all students stay in the gathered area
      • In collaboration with the team, manage set-up and clean-up each day
    • Time Keeper
      • Creates and disburses the schedule
      • Along with the team makes sure every counselor has an assignment and/or duty
      • Schedule monitor – keeping all directors and the camp on the schedule
      • Key, door, and gate monitor
      • Attendance & paperwork
      • Along with the program coordinator, manage overall program content and structure
      • Create and update the daily schedule along with special events
  • General Responsibilities and Expectations:
    • Model to teen volunteers and other young adult staff positive youth development and interaction
    • Model program participation and appropriate interaction with children
    • Foster good communicate with parents
    • Attend regular meetings and consultation with program coordinator and the staff
    • In collaboration with the other directors and coordinator, participation in the development and correction of our teen volunteers
    • In collaboration with the other directors and coordinator, evaluate quality of instruction and activities
    • Help with children who are having difficulty participating in the program, help children and staff resolve conflicts appropriately, intervene if children are having significant behavior issues, and coach other staff members in behavior management and managing groups
    • Develop a summer end program for parents that will showcase the gifts and talents of the campers
    • Prepare all paperwork for the camp
    • Supervise daily check-in and check-out of all Day Campers.
    • Coordinate and facilitate all “large group” activities for Day Campers that may include swimming, park, field trips, talent show etc.
    • Communicate with the program coordinator and the other directors and staff of schedule or logistical changes throughout the week.
    • Make yourself available for staff and parent feedback and concerns.
    • Track and assign weekly staff roles based on staff age, previous assignments, and ability.
    • Provide coordinator and staff copies of weekly schedules, camper lists, health forms, and other information as needed.
    • Abide by all camp policies
    • Be present at the parent and camper orientation
    • Be present for all activities and actively participate and help other campers and volunteers participate as well
    • Must attend all the training days
    • Consult with the Program Coordinator on budget, supplies, and other needs of the programs.
    • Perform all other duties and roles as determined by the Program Coordinator

Job Description 2 – Young Adult Camp Counselors:

  • Group leader of a grade level small group
  • Takes accurate attendance
  • Get to know the campers
  • Develop a summer end program for parents that will showcase the gifts and talents of the campers
  • Work one-on-one with children who are having difficulty participating in the program, help children and staff resolve conflicts appropriately, intervene if children are having significant behavior issues, and coach other staff members in behavior management and managing groups
  • Be present at the parent and camper orientation
  • Abide by all camp policies
  • Must attend all the training days
  • Plan and creates the camp activities making sure all activities are executed well and all supplies are acquired
  • Help staff develop age appropriate activities that keep children creative, active and help them develop skills, teamwork and sportsmanship
  • Help staff use group management skills to engage all children in daily activities
  • Prepare and coordinate alternate activities in the event of schedule changes or other unforeseen circumstances
  • Responsible for the direct care, supervision, and while facilitating the activities of the campers
  • In collaboration with the other activity directors, plan the 4 week themes of the camp and each day of the camp.
  • Facilitate a portion of the lesson plan each day.
  • Develop a summer end program for parents that will showcase the gifts and talents of the campers
  • Be present at the parent and camper orientation
  • Abide by all camp policies
  • Must attend all the training days

Requirements

Internship Summer Stipend:

  • $2500

Qualification:

  • Available for the team training and planning dates starting June 1, 2024 or based on availability due to college.
  • Available the full length of the camp June 17 – July 12; 8:00am – 5:30pm including the field trips.
  • Some college experience.
  • Good communication skills
  • Academic or work experience in ministry, teaching, social work, psychology, child development or related field a plus
  • Previous Gabe’s Place experience a plus
  • Parishioner of San Gabriel Mission is a plus but not necessary and familiarity with the Catholic tradition is preferred
  • Camp experience is a plus but not necessary
  • Once hired, directors must be Virtus Trained, Fingerprinted through the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and First Aid/CPR certified.

Wage Range
The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
