School Grounds & Facilities Maintenance Worker

St. Joseph Elementary School (Pomona)






Supervised by: Pastor of the Parish and School Principal
Employment Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly)
Salary: $17/hour

Position Summary:

  • Provides emergency/unscheduled repairs of facility-related systems and equipment such as air conditioning, plumbing, heating, gas, electric, and other facilities systems. Performs regular preventative maintenance on machines, equipment, and plant facilities.
  • Detects faulty operations or defective material and reports them and any unusual situation to proper supervision.
  • Complies with safety regulations and maintains clean and orderly work areas.
  • Can complete most projects with minimal supervision.
  • Performs routine carpentry work such as building and fitting shelves/steps, repairing doors, and making simple repairs to furniture or fittings. Uses a variety of hand and power tools, electric meters and material handling equipment in performing duties.
  • May perform routine welding, using torch in repairing of cracked metal objects.
  • Paints, stains, redecorates walls, woodwork and fixtures of buildings; mixes paint, matches color, applies paint using rollers, brushes or sprayers as appropriate to the job; prepares surface by moving old finish using scraper, chemicals or sander; fills holes, joints and cracks.
  • Checks for any supplies needed and notifies the school to place order as needed. Works with supplier to find the most economical options. Picks up other parts, supplies or equipment for the school as necessary.
  • Performs related duties as required, such as testing fire equipment for usability and making/cementing small projects such as repairing holes in concrete.
  • Performs routine manual labor such as moving furniture and replacing light fixtures.
  • Sets-up auditorium and other locations in various arrangements of chairs, tables, and other equipment; takes down and stores tables and chairs as appropriate. Assists in event setups as required.
  • Fixing chairs and desks as needed. Setting up classrooms with the appropriate number of desks and chairs.
  • Oversees and assists gardeners on the grounds as necessary.
  • Sweeps, cleans, and waters down paved areas adjacent to school structures on a weekly basis.
  • Performs related duties as necessary


  • Spot cleans as needed for unexpected messes.
  • Wipes down the lunch tables daily before and after lunch time.

Actively supports the philosophy and goals of the school and participates in school and Church activities.


Education and Experience:

  • A minimum of three years’ experience working in facilities maintenance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Air condition and refrigeration equipment sufficient to monitor and/or repair same.
    • Basic carpentry, plumbing, welding, mechanical, electrical, and painting procedures.
    • Cleaning procedures and use of related equipment and chemicals.

    • Frequently perform tasks requiring climbing, crouching, kneeling, stooping, and bending.
