Description

The Mandarin-speaking counselor and International Student Advisor plays a dual role at La Salle College Preparatory, combining expertise in counseling with dedicated support for the international student community. As a Mandarin-speaking counselor, the individual supports students in achieving their academic, social, and postsecondary goals through comprehensive guidance and advocacy. In the capacity of International Student Advisor, the counselor provides tailored support for all international students, ensuring their successful transition, integration, and academic and social well-being at La Salle College Preparatory. This position reports to the Vice President of Counseling Operations for counseling duties and collaborates with and reports to the Director of Global Programs for responsibilities related to international students.

Responsibilities
Mandarin-Speaking Counselor
Academic
– Counsel students on course selection, develop four-year academic plans, and monitor academic progress.
– Collaborate with teachers, parents, and students to create and implement academic plans to ensure students are on track for graduation and postsecondary goals.
– Meet with students earning a C- or below every Mandatory Academic Support period (every three weeks), refer students for assistance, and contact parents as needed.
– Resolve academic concerns under the approval of the Assistant Principal and VP of Counseling Operations.
– Submit contributions for the Parent Newsletter, Parent Weekly Bulletin, and counselor resources.
– Gather and report college matriculation data for seniors for the graduation program.
– Coordinate the National Honor Society program.
– Serve as the testing coordinator for standardized tests, including National Testing Day, SAT, and/or ACT, managing test materials, proctors, and score reports.
College and Career
– Counsel students on postsecondary options based on interests and goals.
– Guide students through college counseling, scholarship, financial aid, and career exploration.
– Assist students in creating balanced and competitive college lists.
– Support students in brainstorming, drafting, and proofreading college essays.
– Help students develop detailed resumes for college admission or job applications.
– Work with students on completing college, financial aid, job, and scholarship applications (CSU, UC, Common App, FAFSA, CSS Profile, etc.).
– Write letters of recommendation and submit required college and scholarship documents.
– Coordinate and implement college counseling programs such as parent/student nights, college tours, and test prep workshops.
– Maintain the Counseling Center with updated materials on college admission, test prep, and enrichment opportunities.
– Collect, track, and analyze data on counseling services and outcomes.
Social-Emotional
– Counsel at-risk students in both crisis and non-crisis situations.
– Consult with administrators, teachers, and fellow counselors to intervene with students in crisis.
– Enhance the mental health curriculum with programs, workshops, and guest speakers.
– Collaborate with families, administrators, and community agencies to provide mental health services as needed.
– Log communications and maintain confidential records in PowerSchool.
International Student Advisor
– Serve as the primary advisor for all international students at La Salle College Preparatory.
– Conduct monthly check-ins with each international student to monitor their academic progress, social well-being, and overall adjustment.
– Provide detailed, written feedback to parents, guardians, and homestay families regarding student progress and well-being.
– Assist international students with their unique needs, including academic challenges, cultural adjustments, and social integration.
– Act as a liaison between international students, their families, and school staff to address academic or social concerns.
– Collaborate closely with and report to the Director of Global Programs, who oversees all international students.
– Support the development of programming to enhance the international student experience at La Salle, such as orientation sessions, cultural events, and academic workshops.

Requirements

– Master’s degree in school counseling or related field.
– Possession of an appropriate Pupil Services Credential, LPCC, MFT, or equivalent.
– At least two years of successful counseling experience, preferably at the high school level.
– Fluency in Mandarin is required.

 

Wage Range

The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
