Manager of Finance/Controller

Job Summary:

Plans and develops the financial, accounting and investment affairs of the School.Understands and applies accounting theories based on generally accepted accountingprinciples, FASB guidelines, as well as other relevant regulatory agencies.  Responsible for fund and not-for-profit accounting practices as well as proactive cash management, including accounts receivable, cash receipts, and cash investments in the execution of approved budgets.Receives direction and works closely with the President and Finance Committee on financial matters affecting the School.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Prepares and administers the annual operating budgets.
  2. Establishes and administers with guidance from the Finance Committee and President, accounting systems and fiscal controls; revenue and expense planning, including capital investments; and cash management and financing to secure prudent execution of approved budgets.
  3. Responsible for the preparation of monthly financial statements and supporting documentation.  Supervises staff in the professional maintenance of general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, property records, inventory controls and all subsidiary ledgers.  Prepares journal entries as needed.
  4. Responsible for monitoring investments and maintaining adequate cash balances to meet current and projected obligations.
  5. Tracks all grants and contracts, and reviews compliance with all applicable authorities.  Prepares interim and final reports as needed.  Performs all other grant administration necessary to ensure continuity of funding from existing sources.
  6. Responsible for all year-end close accounting and financial activities, coordinating with all parties to ensure timely and accurate closing while minimizing errors and omissions.
  7. Coordinates the annual external audit with the Audit Committee and prepares appropriate tax returns.  Prepares annual financial statements, all tax returns and sales tax reports, and prepares all required financial reporting to government agencies.
  8. Maintains regular contact with personnel at banks, insurances and brokerage firms for general banking, cash flow and investment needs.
  9. Consults and coordinates with all segments of administration.  Responsible for policy or action concerning operating of the school as it relates to accounting, budgeting, and financial objectives.
  10. Responsible for timely collections of Accounts Receivable.
  11. Supervises the Finance department, including assisting with professional development and goal setting for all staff of three.
  12. Prepares reports, financial statements with variances, and analyses that clearly articulate the financial position of the school to the President, Board of Trustees and other relevant parties as needed.
  13. Regularly reports directly to the President on the status of all business and financial affairs.
  14. Regularly reports to the Board of Trustees, Finance and other Committees on the status of all business, financial affairs and various projects as requested.
  15. Oversees management and proper use of Finance department data system and maintain comfort with complex data structures.
  16. Performs other duties as requested.



  1. At least five years’ experience in non-profit accounting, including supervision of a department and reporting to President or Executive Director and a Board of Trustees.
  2. Knowledge of automated accounting systems, preferably Blackbaud and comfort with complex data structures.
  3. Advanced knowledge of computer applications, including Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
  4. Experience supervising financial and business operations staff and managing multiple projects at various stages of completion.
  5. Knowledge of accounting practices for not-for-profit organizations, including GAAP, FASB and Internal Revenue Service rules, regulations and requirements affecting business operations in a not-for-profit organization.
  6. Knowledge of all applicable Federal, state, county and local tax laws or regulations, including those specific to not-for-profit organizations.
  7. Experience in the management of investments and endowment funds.
  8. Knowledge of applicable insurance regulations and practices.
  9. Experience with multi-year financial planning and forecasting, including cash flow statements.
  10. Strong analytical skills including the ability to document and track investigative research into transactions and their impact on financial statements.
  11. Highly developed project management and process improvement skills; ability to manage teams in the execution of projects.
  12. Must be able to communicate effectively using oral and/or written skills to present ideas, concepts and recommendations to all levels of management and staff.
  13. Excellent organizational skills.
  14. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to motivate supervised staff and teams, and relate in understood terms the business requirements and operations of the organization to a diverse body of staff, Board of Trustees, and those involved in business relationships with the institution.


  • BachelorsDegree
  • Advanced Degree preferred
  • CPA certification preferred
  • Extensive professional experience with accounting principles, including funds accounting
