Description
The Groundskeeping performs gardening and grounds work as well as building maintenance
and other services and repairs, required to maintain the Maryknoll Sisters Monrovia grounds
and buildings as an attractive and safe complex. This position will oversee the contractors
hired to perform the various additional grounds services, i.e., tree care etc., thus ensuring
completion to expectations their assigned work.
Possible oversight of volunteers assigned in the upkeep of the grounds.
The majority of the work is outdoors year-round, 70% of the time performing
Groundskeeper duties and 30% Maintenance Mechanic duties.
Responsibilities
- Remove edge, transplant, direct seed, weed, incorporate compost and organic fertilizer and add wood chips in garden beds and landscaped areas.
- Water flower beds, newly planted trees and shrubs, and reseeded grass areas
- Prune and/or sheer shrubs and hedges.
- Restore lawn areas by raking, leveling, incorporating compost, topsoil, and organic fertilizer, seeding, strawing and watering.
- Cut fallen trees and branches.
- Using a manual and/or power pole pruner, with a pruner or saw head attachment,
- remove hanging and/or unwanted branches from trees.
- Remove and control by pulling out, digging out, pruning, cutting, sawing,
- and other methods, invasive plant species.
- Cut weeds and grass with a power string trimmer and/or brush cutter.
Skills
- Possess knowledge of plant and tree care.
- Tasks such as weeding, mulching, pruning of shrubs, control of invasive plant species, and building maintenance and repair tasks with a high degree of proficiency.
- Ability to work as a team member with Sister Gardeners and co-workers.
- Ability to relate courteously and professionally with the variety of residents and staff
- who make up the Monrovia Center.
- Ability to lift heavy objects (minimum 50 lbs.)
- Must possess a Valid California Driver’s License.
Job Type: Full-time
Hourly Wage: $18-19 DOE
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 40 hours

- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Training in one or more trade is desirable or combination of education and experience that meets the needs of this position
- Experience: Prior experience in sustainability, groundskeeping and one of required trades
Wage Range
The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
