Full-Time History Teacher

St. John Bosco High School (Bellflower)






With a strong academic background in Science Education, a Salesian Educator will promote academic excellence and support the faith development of young men in a private, Catholic secondary school setting. A Salesian Educator must work in collaboration with parents, students, teachers, administration, and community to promote student success while supporting the faith development / formation of young men.

The duties of a history instructor include creating lesson plans, preparing classroom activities, organizing teaching materials, evaluating student performance, maintaining classroom records, meeting with parents, teachers and other professionals and participating in campus events. Ultimately, it is the goal of a social studies instructor to use a variety of teaching tools for the purpose of teaching students how to analyze historical figures and events and develop critical reading/thinking. Major duties and responsibilities include:

• Teaches content and skills in Modern World and/or United States History utilizing California State and/or Common Core standards.
• Adapts material and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments that guide and challenge students.
• Determines instructional materials designed to achieve instructional goals and behavioral objectives; selects books and instructional aids appropriate to the interest and maturity level of students.
• Encourages students to think independently and to express original ideas.
• Evaluates each student’s progress in science and prepares progress reports.
• Provides individual and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
• Establishes and maintains, with cooperation of the school administration, standards of student behavior needed to provide and orderly, productive classroom environment.
• Maintains professional competence through participation in service education activities provided by the school and/or self-selected professional growth activities.
• Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude and learning problems.
• Communicates with parents and school counselors on the individual student’s progress.
• Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
• Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school.
• Performs basic attendance accounting and business services as required.
• Shares in the sponsorship of student activities and participants in faculty committees.
• Design and compose thematic units that are aligned with California/Common Core scope and sequence; conceive and implement lesson plans that follow the thematic units and scope and sequence
• Collaborate with co-teacher on daily lesson plans, teaching strategies, and student performance.
• Demonstrate flexibility in teaching methods to address multiple learning styles and intelligences.
• Adjust pace and provide individual attention for students based on student assessments.
• Create opportunities for experiential learning.
• Utilize technology programs to enhance comprehension of technology, basic academic skills, and problem solving.
• Performs other significant duties as may be reasonably assigned.


• Education: Bachelor’s degree in History or equivalent.
• Experience: At least two years of experience as a teacher in a comprehensive high school setting.

• Master’s Degree in History, or a related field.
• Valid California Teaching Credential or license authorizing service in grade levels and areas assigned.
• Sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
• Knowledge of and experience in the mission of Catholic Education.

o Hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations, sitting or standing for extended periods of time, reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, bending at the waist, and seeing to read and explain classroom assignments.
