Position Overview

The Controller is responsible for the management and integrity of the school’s financial records by managing and monitoring the day-to-day finance and accounting operations and ensuring strong internal controls and effective transaction processing routines. The Controller supervises the accounting and auditing functions while coordinating and preparing monthly financial reports and variance analysis, and assists in the development of budgets, operational projections, and multi-year forecasts, in addition to other special reports that may be needed.

The Controller will reside in the Business Office where she/he reports to the Vice President of Finance & Administration (CFO) and will supervise the Assistant Controller and the Accounts Payable/Receivable & Student Accounts Supervisor. Also, The Controller will collaborate with the Director of Business Operations, Director Human Resources, and Director of Information Technology who are part of the Business Office.

The Controller will interact with other school employees, parents, and students as needed. This is a full-time, exempt, year-round position. Primary Responsibilities

~ Supervision of general accounting operations, including managing the general ledger and overseeing functions of tuition billing, cash receipts, accounts payable, payroll and investments, ensuring timely closure and reconciliation of accounts, and accurate and timely financial information including but not limited to:

~ Communicating with the Director of Business Operations on collection matters

~ Preparation of monthly financial statements, including variance analyses, bank covenant calculations, and dashboard reports, as needed

~ Assisting the CFO in the preparation and monitoring of departmental budgets and forecasts and working with other administrators and department heads concerning budget performance

~ Taking lead position on the preparation of schedules and work papers for annual audits and tax return

~ Proficiency in evaluating, creating, and maintaining internal controls systems

~ Working with the CFO to communicate, implement and administer internal control and other accounting policies as needed and ensuring compliance with such policies

~ Coordinating with various school departments to prepare annual benchmarking surveys and reports in compliance with the school’s trade organizations (e.g., California Independent School Business Officers Association and the National Business Officers Association). Support Human Resources and other departments in preparation of employment-related surveys and other similar data reports as requested

~ Collaborate with other school departments in support of various initiatives as requested

~ Other miscellaneous tasks as may be assigned in support of the CFO and President

Minimum Education and Experience

~ Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration with an emphasis in accounting and/or finance, CPA or related experience

~ 7-10 years of accounting experience including fund accounting

~ The candidate must have at least 3-5 years’ progressively responsible experience leading or managing an accounting team and/or department

~ General knowledge and understanding of taxation and regulatory compliance

Desired Skills

The ideal candidate for this position will possess:

~ Advanced proficiency with Blackbaud Financial Edge (7 or NXT) accounting software (similar experience with cloud-based accounting software will be considered)

~ Knowledge of integrating Blackbaud Raisers Edge NXT with Financial Edge NXT (similar experience will be considered)

~ Knowledge of FACTS Tuition Management and/or a related tuition management system

~ Strong problem-solving skills

~ Professionalism

~ Strong organizational, research, administrative, and time management skills, including the ability to manage tasks and projects simultaneously while adhering to deadlines and paying attention to detail and accuracy

~ Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, high regard for confidentiality, excellent customer service, and exemplary ethical standards

~ The ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment and to supervise within a diverse community while maintaining accountability

~ A willingness and ability to learn and train, and a commitment to recommend best practices for improvements in process efficiency and efficacy

~ Google Suite (Google Calendar, Docs, Drive, etc. and Microsoft Office (i.e., Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
