Cathedral Director of Liturgy and Music

Reporting to the Cathedral Pastor, the Cathedral Director of Liturgy and Music is a full-time exempt position. The Director is responsible for oversight of liturgical matters at the Cathedral at both the parish and Archdiocesan levels, as well as oversight of musical matters at the Cathedral including the Music Director, Organist and other music ministry staff, while promoting the development of authentic liturgical music based on knowledge of sacred music from Gregorian chant to contemporary compositions.


Job duties include, but are not limited to

  • In collaboration with Cathedral Pastor, is responsible for general oversight of liturgical matters at the Cathedral (Archdiocesan and Parish).
  • Directly responsible for oversight and supervision of Liturgy Department Staff.
  • Oversees or provides the preparation and distribution of the scripts, materials, and notifications for Cathedral liturgies, including special rites and stational liturgies.
  • In collaboration with the Cathedral Director of Volunteers, oversees the coordination and training of liturgy team members (lectors, extraordinary ministers, altar servers, sacristans, ushers and wedding coordinators) for all Cathedral liturgies (weekend and weekday).
  • Organizes and runs monthly meetings of Cathedral Liturgy Committee.
  • Provides latest canonical and ritual information regarding liturgy to team leaders.
  • In collaboration with the Cathedral Pastor and Director of Music, continues to advance the existing music program to ensure the highest quality of choirs, individuals, ensembles, and instrumentalists.
  • Jointly responsible for oversight and direction of Director of Music and Organist.
  • In collaboration with Director of Music, prepares the annual budget for the music program.
  • Attends regular staff meetings and department head meetings.


  • Practicing Catholic with the ability to respect, promote, accommodate, and not be in conflict with the mission, moral and social teachings, doctrines, and laws of the Roman Catholic faith.
  • Degree or commensurate experience in liturgy and sacred music
  • Familiarity with Catholic Church documents on sacred music and liturgy.
  • Experience at a Cathedral or large/active parish.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both in written format and oral presentation; ability to maintain organization, multi-task and establish priorities; exhibit initiative, responsibility and flexibility; knowledge of software applications (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Finale, etc).
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all related groups; clergy, Cathedral staff, musicians and volunteers.
  • Exercises considerable independence and judgment with a high level of confidentiality, working with sensitive and privileged information.
  • Must be able to organize and prioritize work, be proactive, take initiative, resolve complex problems, follow through, and simultaneously manage multiple priorities.
  • Availability to carry out responsibilities in the evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Must successfully pass the required background check and all requirements of the Archdiocesan Program for Child and Youth Protection prior to employment and maintain a satisfactory background check throughout employment.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferable
