Description
The Academic Counselor is responsible to the Vice-Principal and appointed by the Principal. Responsibilities, by grade level assignment, are as follows:
Grades 9-11
– Responsible for the academic counseling of students assigned to him/her.
-Implements the general guidelines of the school regarding guidance and counseling, and applies them as best fits students’ needs.
-Provides referral sources for students who need outside agencies for assistance with problems (personal, health or drug related).
-Authorizes schedule changes when deemed appropriate and enters changes into the computer system.
-Advises returning students regarding course selections to ensure proper placement in classes.
-Meets with individual students regularly who are doing poorly as evidenced by unsatisfactory progress reports and/or report cards.
-Compiles and maintains a comprehensive file of student development over four years, including test results, report cards, progress reports, and other pertinent data.
-Does individual follow-up, where necessary, regarding the interpretation of test results.
-Resolves schedule conflicts during the school year.
-Schedules and facilitates parent-teacher conferences
– Meets with parents and students on a drop-in basis before school, at break and lunch, and after school. Other meetings are by appointment.
-Maintains office hours before the start of the academic year and between the end of school and the beginning of summer school as directed by the vice principal.
-Is available to students during assigned hours and by appointment to discuss concerns.
– Conducts admissions interviews with the administrative cabinet.
– Assists in yard supervision and serves as back-up Dean as needed.
– Coordinates and supervises the at-risk intervention program for the entire school (before and after regular classes).
– Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or vice principal.
Teaching Position:
AP Seminar or Spanish 1/2 courses.
Requirements
-Bachelor’s Degree required (preferably with a major in Education or a related field) and experience teaching basic content and academic skills to high school level students
Master’s degree in school counseling (preferred)
PPS credential (preferred)
One or more years of high school counseling experience
Strong technology skills
Experience with CIALFO and Aeries, preferred
Excellent communication and organizational skills
Bilingual in Spanish, preferred

Wage Range
The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
