Provides academic guidance for an assigned cohort of 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students. Follows students from their 9th grade year to the 11th grade year and works one-on-one with students in partnership with parents and teachers to actively guide students.
1. Serve as the junior class “point person” for academic student and parent meetings
2. Responsible for development of student academic files:
a. Track students with D/F’s at each semester, update graduation grids, and follow up on student’s summer school progress
b. Draft summer letters to parents for students with deficient grades
c. Call parents at the end of the school year to discuss deficient grades and summer
school recommendations and enrollment as necessary
3. Provide academic guidance and college planning for students, especially in their junior
4. Meet individually with students at least twice a year; once in the fall and once in the
spring for college planning, academic guidance, and course registration.
5. Develop academic plans for those students on probation and students struggling
6. Lead caseload-specific student support team of faculty, administration, parents, and
students working collaboratively towards students’ academic success.
7. Collaborate with Dean of Studies and/or Personal Counselor and/or Learning Specialist
to develop academic support to students
8. Work with Director of College Counseling to further enhance our four-year college
counseling program
9. Work with Director of College Counseling to conduct informational meetings and
presentations for students and parents regarding academics and the college admission
process (i.e. college applications, essay writing, college fit, etc.)
10. Assist Director of College Counseling with arranging, supervising, and advertising
college representative visits and tours
11. Work in collaboration with the Director of College Counseling to prepare students for the college application process, standardized tests, and scholarships
12. Assist the Director of College Counseling with letters of recommendation for seniors and the review of teacher recommendations for colleges
13. Create and monitor grade-level Naviance tasks, including the organization of student
Naviance Labs and activities
14. Work in collaboration with the Counseling Department in planning parent education programs and presentations
15. Assist Dean of Studies with course selection process and master schedule as needed
16. Assist the department in coordination of counseling events such as grade level meetings, college fair, case studies, honor award ceremonies, etc.
17. Academic Counselor hours vary from the regular teaching day. There may be a need to
fulfill added duties before and/or after school
18. Represent Providence High School by visiting local and out-of-state colleges and
universities, including our annual college tours, to develop relationships with admissions
representatives and to enhance our college counseling program
19. Keep current with college admissions requirements and processes, and share knowledge with PHS community when needed
20. Attend the following professional development conferences in the Fall of the school year:
• NACAC Conference as needed and with proper approval
• UC/CSU Counselor Conferences (local)
• College Board Counselor Conference (local)
• ACT Counselor Conference (local)
• Other college conferences as needed and with proper approval
• Financial aid conferences as needed and with proper approval
21. Perform other duties as assigned by Administration and Director of College Counseling.

1. Bachelor’s Degree with a Master’s Degree preferably in school counseling or working towards completion of the M.A.
2. College counseling experience is preferred
3. Experience working in a high school setting and knowledge of the American college
admission system
4. Experience working with Naviance software program (preferred)
5. Must be knowledgeable of and able to work within the ethical and legal guidelines set by the American School Counselor Association and NACAC
6. Must be able to address small and large groups in a presentation setting effectively
7. Must be able to attend additional evening meetings, professional development
opportunities, and drive to various activities off campus
