Christmas Day

God’s Unlikely Choice

When Christmas day dawns, trumpets blare the good news, children squeal with glee, gifts are torn open, and people everywhere sing, “Joy to the World,” and rightly so. But let’s peel back the wrapping here — be it the shiny gift variety, or swaddling clothes. There was nothing neat and easy, festive or peaceful about the makings of that first Christmas. Imagine the smell of the barn or cave found in desperation. Imagine the animals braying and bleating as an exhausted and frightened young woman struggled to bring her child into the world with only the aid of her exhausted and frightened husband. Imagine what went through their minds as shepherds arrived and knelt before their baby. Our God could have entered our world any number of ways, but our God chose the most vulnerable and most humble beginning possible. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that as we look at polished Nativity sets in our parish churches and homes. Our God did not just become one of us; our God became the least among us. And from that meager beginning, he saved us all. Joy to the world!
