Thursday of the Fourth Week of Advent

Dazed and Confused

When we recognize God’s hand at work in our lives, it can both elating and frightening. We understand on some interior level that our ability to recognize God’s presence requires something more of us. We can’t un-see it, can’t rewind back to a time when we didn’t know better. In today’s Gospel, when Zechariah’s mouth is opened upon his agreeing to name his son John, “fear came upon on all their neighbors.” They may have been amazed by what they saw, but they were also scared out of their wits. The reaction depends on where we are on the spiritual path. Zechariah and Elizabeth were clearly far down the road of faith. Where are we on that path? Are we elated or frightened?
